Mahakavi Bharat Vyas was one of the greatest lyrisicts of Hindi cinema who gave us songs like Aa laut ke aaja mere meet, Yeh kaun chitrakaar hai, Ae maalik tere bande hum, Keh do koi na kare yahaan pyaar, Nirbal se ladaai balwan ki, Dil ka khillona haye toot gaya, Yeh maati sabhi ki kahaani kahegi, Aadha hai chandrama and many more.
Early Life and Career
Bharat Vyas was born on 6 January 1918, in Churu, Rajasthan. His poetry talent was visible in him since childhood. He started writing professionally by the age of 17-18. After matriculating from Churu, he went to Calcutta where he done his B.Com. His first song was “Aao Veero Hillmil Gaye Vande Mataram.” Around that time, He also wrote a play named “Ramu Channa.” In 1942, he moved to Bombay where he also acted in few films like Ghulami (1945) ,and Prithviraj Sanyukta (1946), but his calling was always in songwriting.
Breakthrough
Bharat Vyas’s first film as a lyricist was Duhaai (1943), directed by V. M. Vyas, his brother. He followed it by films like Prem Sangeet (1943), Man Ki Jeet (1944), Ghulami (1945) , Prithviraj Sanyukta (1946) , and Meerabai (1947) all with music director S.K. Pal.
He also turned director for the film “Rangeela Rajsthan (1949), for which he also composed songs like “Maar Najar Tadpave Jiya Jalave,” “Jhirmir Jhirmir Re Ki Ram Pyara,” and “O Jungle Mangal Desh Mhane Bolo Laagai Ji.” in 1949, he collaborated with legendary music director Khemchand Prakash for “RimJhim,” which was the start of a long working relationship where the gave films like “Sawan Aya Re,” “Bijalee,” “Shree Ganesh Janma,” “Tamasha,” and “Muqaddar.”
He also worked with music directos like Snehal Bhatkar, Sudhir Phadke, Hansraj Behl, Husnlal – Bhagatram, Anil Biswas, Chitragupt, Avinash Vyas, S.N. Tripathi, A.R. Qureshi, Vasant Desai, C. Ramchandra and others.

Bharat Vyas With V. Shantaram
One of his most famous collaboration was with V. Shantaram. He first wrote for him in the film “Nirbal Se Ladaai Balwaan Ki in Toofan Aur Diya. His most famous film with him was Navrang, where he worked with C Ramchandra. His songs like “Aadha Hai Chandrama Raat Aadhi,” “Are Ja Re Hat Natkhat,” “Kaari Kaari Kaari Andhiyari Thi Raat,” “Shyamal Shyamal Baran,” “Kavi Raja Kavita Ke Mat Ab Kaan Marodo,” “Shyamal Shyamal Baran,” are now considered classics. In 1957 he wrote for V Shantaram’s Do Ankhen Barah Haath. Later Career
He also collaborated with eminent directors like Bimal Roy, and Vijay Bhatt, enjoying uninterrupted success for two decades. During this prolific period, he crafted some of the most enchanting songs for films, including “Chandralekha,” “Parineeta,” ” “Sahara,” “Angulimal,” “Suvarna Sundari,” “Kavi Kalidas,” “Navrang,” “Rani Rupmati,” “Saranga,” “Janam Janam Ke Phere,” “Hum Hindustani,” among others.
One of his most poigent and heartbreaking songs was “Aa Laut Ke Aaja Mere Meet” in Rani Rupmati. It was the song which he wrote for his lost son. His younger brother, Brij Mohan Vyas (V M Vyas), was an iconic actor. Bharat Vyas passed away in Mumbai on July 4, 1982.
