Alok Nath is one of the most recognisable faces of Indian films and TV, known for his uber-Saskai screen image and iconic roles in films like Maine Pyar Kiya, Hum Aapke Hain Kaun, and Hum Sath Sath Hain, as well as TV serials like Buniyad, Bharat Ek Khoj, Tara, Daane Anaar Ke, Imtihaan, and many more.

Early Life and Career

Alok Nath was born on July 10, 1956, in Khagaria, Bihar. Alok Nath studied at Modern School, Barakhamba Road, Delhi, before going to Hindu College, Delhi University. Nath’s journey in the arts began with an interest in theatre, which led him to the prestigious National School of Drama in Delhi.

Alok Nath made his TV debut with the serial “Rishte-Naate” in 1980 and followed it with shows like Kaala Jal, Darpan, Titliyan, and Chhapte Chhapte. He became a household name with Ramesh Sippy’s soap opera “Buniyaad.” His portrayal of Haveli Ram in the iconic television series is a landmark in his career.

He made his film debut with a small role in Richard Attenborough’s Oscar-winning film ‘Gandhi‘ in 1982. In his early career, he did not get any significant roles until Buniyaad made him a famous actor.

In 1988, he famously portrayed the role of Jaswant Singh in “Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak (1988).” His role as Bhagyshri’s father Karan in “Maine Pyar Kiya (1989),” was his breakthrough

He then appeared in many memorable roles, such as Father Braganza in “Mohre (1987),” Jaswant Singh in “Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak (1988),” Ustad Ali Mohammed in “Kabzaa (1988),” Karim Baba in “Dayavan (1988),” Veer Singh in “Suryaa: An Awakening (1989),” Deenanath Chauhan in “Agneepath (1990),” and many more.

Although he has acted in all kinds of films, it was the roles of the caring patriarch that gave him the moniker of “Sansakari Babuji” within the industry and among fans. He also appeared in many famous serials like Shyam Benegal‘s Bharat Ek Khoj (1988), Talaash (1992), Tara (1993), Daane Anaar Ke (1994), Imtihaan (1994), Rishtey (1999), Kabhie Kabhie (1997), Astitva…Ek Prem Kahani (2002), Piya Ka Ghar (2002), Woh Rehne Waali Mehlon Ki (2005), Har Ghar Kuch Kehta Hai (2007), Ghar Ek Sapnaa (2007), Sapna Babul Ka…Bidaai (2007), Yahan Main Ghar Ghar Kheli (2009), Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai (2015), and many more.

The Other Side Of Sanskari Bauji

In 2018, during the wave of the Indian Me Too movement, he faced allegations of sexual misconduct, which he denied. The Mumbai Police charged him with rape following a complaint by writer-producer Vinta Nanda. Following this, many reputed actresses, including Navneet Nishan, Renuka Shahane, Himani Shivpuri, Sandhya Mridul, and Deepika Amin, shared their experiences of his bad behaviour; some of them even shared about how they themselves have been assaulted by him.

Many of his coworkers admitted that Alok Nath had a drinking problem and became very aggressive and out of control when under influence. In the serial Bidaai, he says, “Alok Nath is an angel until he is under the influence of alcohol.” At the same time, she says that she does not believe in rape charges. Alok Nath also came to the news for publicly abusing social activist Kavita Krishnan on Twitter.

Personal Life

Despite the complexities of his personal life, Alok Nath’s professional contributions cannot be overlooked. Alok Nath is married to Ashu Singh, and together they have two kids: a son- Shivang Nath, and a daughter, Junhai Nath. His sister, Vinita Malik, is a veteran actress in TV and films.
