Ghai began his career in Hindi cinema as an actor, appearing in small roles in films like “Taqdeer” (1967) and “Aradhana” (1969). However, his true calling was behind the camera. His directorial debut came with the action thriller “Kalicharan” (1976), which was a significant success and marked the beginning of his illustrious career as a filmmaker.

The action-packed film tells the story of DSP Prabhakar and Kalicharan, a reformed criminal played by Shatrughan Sinha in a dual role. The film was a resounding success and established him as a prominent figure. His performance earned him widespread acclaim and opened the doors to more leading roles.

Subhash Ghai again collaborated with Sinha for the crime drama “Vishwanath (1978),” the story of an honest and principled lawyer who takes on the powerful and corrupt. In 1980, he directed “Karz,” a musical thriller that tells the story of revenge and reincarnation. Starring Rishi Kapoor, the film became a blockbuster hit, thanks to its gripping storyline and memorable music composed by Laxmikant-Pyarelal. Songs like “Om Shanti Om” and “Ek Hasina Thi” remain evergreen classics.

The 1983 blockbuster “Hero” launched Jackie Shroff and Meenakshi Sheshadri into superstardom and established Ghai as the top director of Hindi cinema. The film’s story of a young man torn between crime and love resonated with audiences. The music, especially the song “Lambi Judaai,” sung by Reshma, became immensely popular.

His next “Karma (1986)” is a multi-starrer action film featuring Dilip Kumar, Anil Kapoor, Jackie Shroff, and Sridevi. The film’s mix of drama and action set the stage for a new era in Indian cinema.

Widely considered one of the greatest masala films, “Ram Lakhan (1989)” is like a template for the masala genre. “Ram Lakhan” is a family drama that explores the bond between two brothers, played by Anil Kapoor and Jackie Shroff. The film’s high-octane drama, sibling rivalry, and unforgettable music, grand sets, and larger-than-life characters, as well as the iconic songs “My Name Is Lakhan,” “O Ram Ji,” and “Mere Do Anmol Ratan,” have ensured its timeless appeal.

In the 1991 film Saudagar, he brings together two of India’s most loved stars, Dilip Kumar and Raj Kumar, who, for some reason, only worked once in 1959, Paigham. “Saudagar” is a love story set against a legendary tale of friendship and betrayal. The film’s grand sets, powerful performances, and memorable music, including the song “Ilu Ilu,” made it a significant hit.

“Khalnayak (1993) ” turned the spotlight onto the villain, with Sanjay Dutt delivering a dark, brooding performance as the anti-hero. The film’s themes of redemption, love, and lawlessness, combined with its compelling storyline and dynamic direction, made it a critical and commercial success. The song “Choli Ke Peeche” became a sensational chart-topper.

He formed successful collaborations with legendary actors like Dilip Kumar, Shatrughan Sinha, Nutan, Rakhi, Anil Kapoor, Jackie Shroff, and Amrish Puri. Ghai also launched and mentored a number of superstars like Jacky Shroff, Meenakshi Sheshadri, Madhuri Dixit, Manisha Koirala, and Mahima Chaudhary.
