M. G. Ramachandran (MGR) (17 January 1917 – 24 December 1987) was a towering figure in Indian cinema and politics. Starting as a successful actor in Tamil cinema, he earned immense popularity for his charismatic on-screen presence.
MGR later transitioned into politics and founded the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), becoming the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu in 1977. Ramachandran made his film debut in 1936, in the film Sathi Leelavathi, directed by Ellis R. Dungan, an American-born film director. His first lead role in A. S. A. Sami’s swashbuckler film Rajakumari (1947) was followed by Manthiri Kumari (1950), Marmayogi (1951), En Thangai (1952), and his Malayalam debut against B. Saroja in Genova. He became a superstar by films like Malaikkallan (1954), written by M. Karunanidhi, Alibabavum 40 Thirudargalum (1956), Nadodi Mannan (1958), Periya Idathu Penn (1963), Thozhilali (1964) & Padagotti (1964).
