Bindiya Goswami, born on January 6, 1961, was spotted at a party when so was about 14 years old, by Hema Malini’s mother, who saw a resemblance to Hema and recommended her to film producers.
Her debut in Hindi cinema was with “Jeevan Jyoti” alongside Vijay Arora, despite the film not performing well. Undeterred, Bindiya later found success in Basu Chatterjee’s “Khatta Meetha” (1977) and “Prem Vivah” (1979). She achieved her breakthrough with Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s comedy classic “Gol Maal” (1979). Goswami’s on-screen charm and beauty contributed to her popularity during that era.
The success continued with films like “Dada” (1979), leading to collaborations with Vinod Mehra and a prominent role opposite Shashi Kapoor in the blockbuster “Shaan” (1980).
Bindiya married to her co-star Vinod Mehra, but their marriage ended in divorce after four years. She then married famous director J.P. Dutta in 1985 and stepped away from acting. In her second innings in the film industry, Bindiya found a new calling as a costume designer. She contributed her creative talents to iconic female stars like Rani Mukerji, Kareena Kapoor, and Aishwarya Rai in films directed by her husband J.P. Dutta, including “Border” (1997), “Refugee” (2000), “LOC Kargil” (2003), and “Umrao Jaan” (2007).
Despite not being active in recent years, she remains a nostalgic figure for fans of classic Bollywood cinema.
