Anju Mahendru’s mother is the sister of the music director Madan Mohan, She started modelling at the age of 13. Anju was spotted by poet and lyricist Kaifi Azmi, who recommended her to Basu Bhattacharya. Basu cast her in Uski Kahani in 1966, his debut film as a director. She later went on to act in films such as Jewel Thief, Bandhan, Intaqam, and Dastak. Later in the 1990s, she became a major force on TV with serials like Anoogoonj, Swabhiman, Astitwa, Kahin to Hoga. She also act in a films like Sathiya, Page 3, and Dirty Picture.
The mid- to late-60s was the time when she met Rajesh Khanna, a struggler with a spark in his eyes, They fell head over heels for each other, Khanna was never an admirer of his women working in films and modeling and discouraged Mahendru to actively pursuing an acting career, though she was the top model at the time. Finally, in 1969, Aradhana came and Khanna became an overnight star, People went crazy for him, and girls were sending letters written with blood, It was a frenzy like never before.
All this and their ego clashes created a rift between them, Rajesh Khanna got super busy as he went on to deliver 15 solo hits in the next 2–3 years. Reportedly, Rajesh Khanna proposed to her but she declined in 1971. They broke up and Rajesh Khanna married a 17 year old Dimple Kapadia with the condition that she would not do the movies, her debut film, Bobby, came after their marriage.
Anju briefly sated legendary cricketer Sir Garry Sobers and then Imtiaz Ali another cricketer till 1979. Anju Never married, she and Rajesh khanna were not on talking terms after their breakup for 17 years.
In 1988 at the decline of Rajesh Khanna’s career the reconciled and remain close friend still Khanna’s death in 2012. She used to take care of his medical needs and even accompanied him to hospital. Anju told Mahesh Bhatt ‘My only consolation is that I was holding his hand when he took his last breathe’.”
