Swarup Dutta

Swarup Dutta was the iconic actor of Bengali cinema, known for films like “Apanjan,” “Ekhoni,” “Ora Charjon,” “Sadharan Meye,” “Sagina Mahato,” “Harmonium,” “Pita Putra,” and “Maa o Meye.” He also worked in the Hindi film “Uphaar,” opposite Jaya Bhaduri.

Early Life

Swarup Dutta was born on June 22, 1941, in the Dutta family of Hatkhola, Kolkata. Swarup Dutta’s journey from a young, passionate individual to a celebrated actor is a tale of dedication and artistry. He got his early education from South Point School and Ramakrishna Mission Vidyamandira. He graduated from St. Xavier’s College, Kolkata, in economics. It was during these formative years that Dutta’s path crossed with veteran actor Utpal Dutt, a meeting that would significantly influence his career trajectory. Intially He worked with Dutt’s theatre group.

Swarup Dutta stated his journey in the 1968 drama film “Apanjan,” directed by Tapan Sinha. The film not only won the National Film Award but also established Dutta as a formidable talent in the industry.

His versatility shone through in a variety of roles, from the hero to the character actor, in numerous Bengali films throughout the late ’60s and early ’70s. His performances in films like “Megh o Roudra,” “Sagina Mahato,” and “Pita Putra” further cemented his status as a distinguished actor.

Other Work

Dutta’s talent transcended regional boundaries, and he made his presence felt in the Hindi film industry with “Uphaar” in 1971, alongside Jaya Bhaduri.

Some of his other films include “Andha Atit,” “Harmonium,” “Ekhoni,” “Sansarer Itikatha,” “Bishabriksha,” “Kony,” “Swarnasikhar Prangane,” “Maa O Meye,” “Paap Punya,” “Ora Charjon,” “Sadharan Meye,” “Chokher Aloye,” “Nayantara,” and many more. He appeared in a documentary, Thana Theke Aschi (2010), late in his career. His final credited roles came in Jhumura (2015).

Swarup suffered a brain hemorrhage in 2019 after a fall at home. He died on July 17, 2019, at age 78 in a Kolkata hospital due to age-related ailments. His son, Sharan Dutta, followed him into acting, continuing the family legacy.
