Actor and filmmaker Parambrata Chatterjee is a versatile and intense performer who is known for his iconic films like Baishe Srabon (2011), Kahaani (2012), Sold (2014), Kadambari (2017), Anukul (2017), Pari (2018), Ramprasad Ki Tehrvi (2019), Bulbbul (2020), and Doctor Bakshi (2023).

Early Life

Parambrata Chatterjee was born on June 27, 1980, in Kolkata, West Bengal. His father, Satinath Chatterjee, worked as a journalist. His mother, Sunetra Ghatak, was a respected film critic. Parambrata’s maternal grandparents are Ashish Chandra Ghatak and Gita Ghatak. He is also the grandnephew of the legendary filmmaker Ritwik Ghatak. His aunt, Mahasweta Devi, was a renowned Bengali author and activist.

Parambrata attended Patha Bhavan School in Kolkata. He earned a bachelor’s degree in English literature from Jadavpur University. His passion for filmmaking led him to Bristol University in England, where he completed a Master’s in Film and TV Production.

The Beginning

Parambrata’s acting career began with Bengali television and films. His acting debut came in Urmi Chakraborty’s National Award-winning film “Hemanter Pakhi (2002).” He made his TV debut with the telefilm Sheshkritya in 2003. One of his early notable film was Bhalo Theko (2003), directed by Gautam Halder,

In 2003 he starred in Sandip Ray’s “Bombaiyer Bombete,” based on the story of the great Satyajit Ray. In the film he portrayed the role of Topshe while Feluda was played by Sabyasachi Chakrabarty.

Some of his early films include “Shubhodrishti (2003),” “Nishijapon (2003),” “The Bong Connection (2006), Dosar (2006), Kailashey Kelenkari (2007), Tintorettor Jishu (2008), Ek Bar Bolo Uttam Kumar (2009), Kaalbela (2009), Thana Theke Aschi (2010), Jaani Dyakha Hawbe (2011), Bhooter Bhabishyat (2012), and many more.

Parambrata Chatterjee – The Actor

Parambrata gained attention for Srijit Mukherji’s Baishe Srabon (2011), a crime thriller. The film also stars Prosenjit Chatterjee, Goutam Ghose and Raima Sen. In the film he played ACP Abhijit Pakrashi, who was investigating a serial killer. He again collaborated with Srijit Mukherji for the black comedy Hemlock Society (2012), starring Koel Mallick, Dipankar De, Roopa Ganguly. In the film he played Anand Kar, who runs a society helping people with suicidal tendencies in dying. 

In 2013, Prambarta starred in
Kaushik Ganguly’s Apur Panchali, a film based on the life of Subir Banerjee. Banerjee famously portrayed the young Apu in Satyajit Ray’s Pather Panchali (1955). Apur Panchali  screened at the 44th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) and fetch Ganguli the Best Director Award.

In 2012, he made his Hindi film debut with Sujoy Ghosh’s “Kahaani,” as Satyoki “Rana” Sinha alongside Vidya Balan. He then acted in Gang of Ghosts (2014), Yaara Silly Silly (2015), Pari (2018), Bulbbul (2020), Ramprasad Ki Tehrvi (2021), Kaun Pravin Tambe? (2022), Notary (2024) and Chakda X’press (2025).

Parambrata Chatterjee – The Filmaker

In the beginning of his career, Parambrata Chatterjee directed telefilms like Premer Galpo (2006), Sarate Prem (2006), and QSQT Policer Duty (2007). As a producer, he founded Workshop Productions Pvt. Ltd with Rudranil Ghosh in 2011, later expanding to Roadshow Films with Aritra Sen. His first film as a director was “Jiyo Kaka (2011).” His next film was Hawa Bodol (2013), himself with Raima Sen and Rudranil Ghosh. He won the Rituparno Ghosh Memorial Award for film. In 2017 he directed webseries Feluda (2017) where he himself played the role of Feluda with Riddhi Sen playing Topshe.

One of his most acclaimed film was Abhijaan (2022), which he directed and acted in. The film was a biographical drama based on the life of the legendary Soumitra Chatterjee. Some of his other films include Lorai: Play to Live (2015), Shonar Pahar (2018), Tiki-Taka (2020), Bony (2021), Abhijaan (2022), and Ei Raat Tomar Amar (2024). His directorial works are known for their nuanced storytelling and strong character development. In 2011, Parambrata became a producer with the establishment of Workshop Productions Pvt. Ltd.

Other Work

Parambrata Chatterjee partnered with Jeffrey D. Brown for Sold (2014), an international project. The film is based on Patricia McCormick’s novel about child trafficking.
He again worked with Kaushik Ganguly for Cinemawala (2016), where he acted alongside  Paran Bandyopadhyay. The film won the Filmfare Award for Best Film—Bengali and Best Actor for Bandyopadhyay. In 2016, Parambrata stars as a lead in Bastu-Shaap, directed by Kaushik Ganguly. 

He also acted in a few Bangladeshi productions like Bhuban Majhi (2017), Voyongkor Sundor (2017) and Ajob Karkhana (2019). Parambrata acted in Shonibar Bikel (Saturday Afternoon), a Bangladesh-German co-production directed by Mostafa Sarwar Farooki in 2019. The film was based on the 2016 Dhaka cafe attack that killed 22 people.

In 2019, Parambrata starred in Satyanweshi Byomkesh, directed by Sayantan Ghosal. He plays Byomkesh Bakshi, the iconic sleuth created by Sharadindu Bandyopadhyay, in a story adapted from Magna Mainak. Set in 1970s Calcutta during the Bangladesh Liberation War and Naxal unrest, the film explores a politically charged murder mystery. 

In 2025, he starred in Srijit Mukherji’s sequel to Hemlock Society (2012), Killbill Society. Parambrata reprised the role of Ananda Kar, who was hired by Poorna Aich (Koushani Mukherjee), a struggling actress, to end her life.

Personal Life

Parambrata Chatterjee was previously in a relationship with actress Swastika Mukherjee and later with Ike Schouten, a doctor from the Netherlands. On November 27, 2023, he married Piya Chakraborty, a singer-social worker, in a private ceremony. They welcomed their first child, a son, on June 1, 2025, in Kolkata.
