Her foray into the world of cinema was almost serendipitous. While visiting her mother in Mumbai, famous filmmaker Saeed Akhtar Mirza noticed her. Mirza chose her for his upcoming film Naseem (1995), which revolved around the sensitive topic of the Babri Masjid demolition. Despite her initial reluctance due to academic commitments, she accepted the role, marking her debut at the tender age of thirteen.

In the film, Mayuri portrayed the 15-year-old Naseem, while Kaifi Azmi played her ailing grandfather. The film, set in early 1992, tells the story of the growing communal divide in the city. The film won the National Award for Best Direction and Best Screenplay.
