Early Life and Career
Gautami Tadimalla was born on July 2, 1968, in Tadimalla village, Andhra Pradesh. Her father, T.R. Seshagiri Rao, worked as a radiation oncologist. Her mother, Vasundhara Devi, served as a pathologist and diagnostician. She hails from a Telugu-speaking family in Srikakulam, Andhra Pradesh. Gautami spent her growing-up years in various locations, including Visakhapatnam and Kerala, due to her parents’ professions.
Gauthami studied at Bishop Cotton Girls’ School in Bengaluru, excelling in academics. She later enrolled at GITAM College in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh. She did not complete her degree, opting to focus on her budding acting career.

Gautami got her break while she was still at GITAM College. She debuted with the Telugu film “Dayamayudu (1987).” It was a biographical drama about Jesus Christ, directed by V. Madhusudhana Rao. The role came as a surprise offer, as she was busy in her studies.
Her first lead role came in “Gandhinagar Rendava Veedhi (1987),” with Rajendra Prasad. The same year she starred in Srinivasa Kalyanam (1987) with Venkatesh, Bhanu Priya and Mohan Babu. Her performance in those films opened doors to more films.
In 1988 she made her Tamil debut with “Guru Shishyan,” alongside Rajinikanth and Prabhu. Her Kannada debut came in 1988 with B. C. Gowrishankar’s “Elu Suttina Kote.” The success of these films encouraged her to leave the college and focus on her acting career.

Gauthami’s personal life has seen its share of ups and downs. She was married to businessman Sandeep Bhatia in 1998, with whom she has a daughter, Subbulakshmi. The couple later divorced in 1999. From 2005, she lived with Kamal Haasan, meeting him on “Apoorva Sagodharargal (1989).” They parted ways in 2016, citing personal reasons.
Comeback
In recent years, Gauthami has made a comeback in the film industry, with films like Papanasam (2015) with Kamal Hasan. She then starred in Manamantha (2016) with Mohanlal showcasing her versatility and depth as an actress.
She also worked as a costume designer and received the Vijay Award for Best Costume Designer for her work in “Dasavathaaram (2009)” as well as the Tamil Nadu State Film Award for Best Costume Designer for “Vishwaroopam (2016).”
