Anubhav Sinha, known for socially charged dramas, recently shared his views on film economics. He advocates for medium-budget projects as the smartest path forward. This stance follows the release of his courtroom thriller Assi, which tackles sexual assault and legal apathy.

Over the years, Sinha directed several films that probe societal issues. Anubhav Sinha movies that raised the social questions included Mulk (2018) on Islamophobia, Article 15 (2019) on caste oppression, Thappad (2020) on domestic violence, and Anek (2022) on Northeast India’s unrest. In 2023 he directed Bheed, which tells the harrowing story of migrant workers during the COVID-19 lockdown in India.

Assi (2026) continues this trend and raised the issue of sexual harassment and victim shaming. With Taapsee Pannu leading as a prosecutor facing systemic hurdles, the film also has Kani Kusruti, Revathi, Zeeshan Ayub, and Manoj Pahawa in important roles.

Anubhav Sinha Movies—Experiment With Cost

In interviews, Sinha explains his shift. He once favored quick OTT transitions for smaller films. Now, he sees medium-budget, high-concept stories as prime for strong returns. These films balance creative freedom with financial viability. He cites market realities: big spectacles risk high costs, while tiny releases struggle for visibility.

Sinha points to Assi‘s promotion as an example. He doubled marketing efforts, touring smaller centers for two months. This approach connected with audiences beyond metros. He argues proper outreach bridges the gap, as viewers seek relatable content.

His perspective influences emerging filmmakers. Medium budgets allow bold narratives without blockbuster pressures. Anubhav Sinha movies show the track record of success in this space—Mulk grossed around Rs 30 crore on an 18 crore budget, while Thappad grossed Rs 44 crore on a 25 crore budget. Article 15 was an even bigger hit, with over 90 crore gross on a 30-crore budget. Although his films like Anek and Bheed were not that successful at the box office, Sinha surely tested the formula successfully.
